Martha Stewart is doing it every morning, Naomi Campbell and designer Georgina Champman are also doing this, and even Beyoncé is trying to achieve her (humongous) goal – drinking a glass of lemon water a day (Beyoncé’s goal is one gallon a day).
The benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning are largely connected to the vitamin C in the lemons. According to official numbers from USDA, from a half a lemon you get 9,3 milligrams of this vitamin, or around 10% of the daily recommended intake. (According to Katherin Zeratsky, RD, LD, adults consumption of vitamin C should be between 65 and 90 milligrams per day.)
With this in mind starting your day with a dose of vitamin C is certainly good for your health, especially because it gives you a hit of the required essential nutrient. The National Institute of health classifies vitamin C as an antioxidant, that boost the immune system, prevents scurvy, and even regenerates other antioxidants.
“Lemon and water in the morning can create alkaline environment in the body, which helps the thrive,” explains Liz Traines, a healthy lifestyle coach.
In Reader’s Digest, Erin Palinski-Wade a registered dietician explain that other benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning include promoting bowel movements, improving organ function and boosting metabolism. It should be mentioned that these is also a benefit of just staying hydrated, with or without lemon.
So, for whatever reason you decide to consume more liquids during the day (according to some surveys 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated), it would be beneficial for your health.
